The Temple College Business and Continuing Education Division is sponsoring a conference for mental health professionals on Friday, Sept. 27, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Temple College Pavilion. The conference will focus on prevalent community issues and how the underlying causes can be connected to mental health and untreated mental illness. Different sessions will focus on mental illness, substance abuse, family violence, chronic illness and suicide. The goal of the conference is to increase awareness of mental health issues and help reduce the negative stigma connected to mental health. Keynote speaker for the conference will be mental health advocate Clarena Tobon. Tobon is a field advocate for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and co-founder of Hope Happens, which brings suicide prevention and awareness to communities in Central Texas. She was featured in the documentary “Family Journeys: Reclaiming Life after Loss.” Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be available for those who attend the conference. The $59 fee for the conference includes breakfast and lunch. For additional information, or to register, call 254-298-8625 or visit www.templejc.edu/bce.
