The Temple Public Library has been selected to participate in Read Across Texas—Know Your Neighbor: Cultivating Communities of Compassion, a project of the Texas Center for the Book. This program is to help encourage communities to engage in challenging, insightful, and transformative conversations. With that objective in mind, the library will host two programs highlighting books which explore the theme of what it means to “know your neighbor.” A bilingual story time will be presented on Saturday, August 3rd at 10:30 a.m., featuring the picture book Dreamers by Yuyi Morales, followed by a reading of the Spanish edition, Soñadores, which tells the story of a young mother immigrating from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico to El Paso, Texas with her infant son. The readings will be followed by a craft activity. Adult patrons are encouraged to read and discuss Gregory Boyle’s Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion, drawn from the author’s personal experiences working in a gang intervention and rehabilitation program in Los Angeles. Copies are available for checkout, and all are invited to participate in a discussion at Books for Lunch on Wednesday, August 7th at noon in the Board Room. The Temple Public Library is located at 100 W. Adams Avenue. For hours of operation and program details, please visit www.templelibrary.us.
