Regional partners the Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce, Workforce Solutions of Central Texas, and the Temple Chamber of Commerce are excited to host the Central Texas Education Summit on Wednesday, July 10, 2019, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Central Texas Education Summit will feature Mr. Mike Morath, Texas Education Agency Commissioner, with an update on the state of education in Texas. The Commissioner will also review recent legislation and how it may impact Central Texas. “In our 2019 legislative priorities, local Chambers of Commerce in Temple, Belton, Killeen and Harker Heights joined together to advocate for changes in the way public education has been funded in recent years,” noted Rod Henry, Temple Chamber President. During the 86th Texas Legislature which concluded in May 2019, a sweeping and historic school finance bill, House Bill 3 (HB 3), was passed and signed by Governor Greg Abbott. HB 3 provides more money for Texas classrooms, increases teacher compensation, reduces recapture, and cuts local property taxes for Texas taxpayers. The bill is one of the most transformative Texas education bills in recent history and is a result of months of work that culminated in bipartisan agreement between the members of the Texas House and Senate. Rod Henry continued, “Commissioner Morath will bring invaluable insight about the current state of education in Texas and provide color on what Central Texas can expect from the recent legislation.” The Temple Chamber is excited to join our regional partners in providing and opportunity for the business community to learn about topics that impact our region’s competitiveness and quality of life.
