With a combined 65 years of experience in their respective fields, Westphalia Market and Tanglefoot Restaurants (owners of Bird Creek Burger Company, Treno Pizzeria and Taproom, and First Street Roasters in Temple) have entered into a joint venture to bring a unique specialty offering to Central Texas.
The joint venture, Westphalia Tanglefoot Markets LLC, will own and operate a combination full butcher shop, bakery, and grocery store. The market, still to be named, will be located at 13 S. Main Street, and will provide a plethora of offerings to enhance the livability and retail experience in the heart of Temple’s ever-expanding downtown area.
Westphalia Market currently operates their historic, well-known market in Westphalia, as well as a market/grocery option in Hutto, Texas. Operating the markets for 47 years, Pat and Beth Rabroker have created one of the most well-known meat market brands in the Central Texas region.
"Tanglefoot Restaurants has had a real desire to bring additional food and retail options to Temple" stated Jacob Bates, President and co-owner of Westphalia Tanglefoot Markets LLC. "We knew we wanted to explore a grocery option that would also have a butcher shop and bakery, to enhance our ability to vertically integrate and have even greater quality control of our supply chain. When we heard that the Rabrokers, (owners of Westphalia Market), also were interested in bringing a similar offering to Temple, we were excited to discuss a partnership that would allow us to bring our collective skillsets together to create an unparalleled market in downtown."
Pat and I believe in locally owned and operated businesses, and we were looking for our next location to expand our offering" stated Beth Rabroker, co-owner of Westphalia Market and Westphalia Tanglefoot Markets. "The partnership with Tanglefoot Restaurants allows us to share in their future vision for the downtown Temple community."
Design of the butcher shop/bakery/market is nearing completion, and renovation of the former In the Mood ballroom is slated to begin later this year.
One additional component to the Westphalia Tanglefoot Market partnership is that the entity will also offer an exclusive, grass-fed beef offering. JF Cattle Ranch, a cattle operation run by Bruce Bates (co-owner of Westphalia Tanglefoot Market) and Sam Stroder, will provide grass-fed and finished cattle to the market. The product will be sold exclusively in the downtown Temple market, as well as the afore-mentioned Westphalia Market in Hutto.
"We couldn’t be more excited about the partnership with Pat and Beth, and the entire Westphalia Market team" said Bo Harvey, co-owner. "Pat and Beth have built a brand beyond reproach. They are great people with a great business. They both know the meat business inside and out, and have a loyal following. We hope we have built a similarly loyal following with our restaurants, and we all feel the combination of our brands and experience can create something truly special and unique for our area."
"Temple’s growth over the past few years has been something to behold" Harvey continued. "We all want to help continue the trajectory our community is on, and make Temple something we all can be proud of and enjoy."
Interested patrons can get a sneak peak of the butcher shop/bakery/market, along with a sampling of products that the market will carry, during the City of Temple’s "Imagine the Possibilities" tour this Wednesday, May 25th, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. The market is Attraction 18 on the tour.
