Founding members and current Board members presented a short ceremony remembering those that created the Temple Civic Theatre and those responsible for receiving the historical marker. A small reception was held following the unveiling. The Temple Civic Theatre has roots dating back to the 1920s and 30s when Nora Lee Wendland (1896-1988) and friends spearheaded a program to promote cultural arts and creative attractions making Temple an artistic oasis on the Blackland Prairie. With help from the City Federation of Women’s Clubs, they began an arts festival that evolved into the Cultural Activities Center (CAC) in Temple. Through the 1940s and 50s one of the CAC groups was an amateur theatrical group, The Old Central Players. In 1965, the group reorganized as the Temple Civic Theatre and has brought joy and creativity to Temple and the surrounding area ever since.
