March 30 is National Doctors’ Day, an annual observance honoring the skill and commitment of physicians nationwide who provide high-quality healthcare to the patients and communities they serve. The date chosen marks the first time a physician used an anesthetic during surgery in 1842, but the recognition more broadly celebrates the contributions of physicians in their pivotal role of safeguarding and improving the well-being of patients. At ScionHealth, we witness the expertise, compassion and leadership physicians bring to our care teams daily at our 100+ facilities across 28 states. Our doctors are driven to help others, and their work is often life-changing and even life-saving. On Doctors’ Day and every day, we are inspired by our physicians and the expert care they provide. March is National Nutrition Month, which is an occasion for us to recognize the huge importance of nutrition and dietetics in the recovery of our specialty hospital patients, with our efforts led by expert dietitians working in our hospitals. Last fall, Kindred Hospitals was overjoyed to see one of our clinical dietitians, Jade Moore of Kindred Hospital Chattanooga, honored with ScionHealth’s Monarch Caring and Community Award as one of the organization’s caregivers of the year. Congratulations to Kindred Hospital Albuquerque CEO, Lisa Cochran, on being named to Becker's Healthcare Hospital Review’s 2024 list of Women Hospital CEOs to Know. It’s a well-deserved recognition for Lisa, who became CEO in Albuquerque in 2022 after previously serving five years as Chief Clinical Officer. We are grateful for Lisa’s strategic leadership, clinical knowledge and dedication to quality while helping make Kindred Hospital Albuquerque a provider of choice in its community.

During March, we are proud to join organizations and individuals around the country in celebrating Women’s History Month as a time to honor and recognize the historic accomplishments and contributions of women in all facets of our culture and society — often in the face of gender stereotyping, sexual discrimination and other forms of inequality. We hope you’ll find meaningful ways this month and throughout the year to learn about women’s history and to support and empower women.

Battling deep-seated prejudice against women and Black Americans in medicine, Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, became the first Black woman to earn a medical degree in the United States in 1864. After graduating from the New England Female Medical College, she treated Civil War refugees before becoming the first Black person to publish a medical book, focusing on best practices for good health for women and children. This Black History Month, we applaud Rebecca’s pioneering achievements.

Each February, Black History Month provides an opportunity to celebrate and learn about the invaluable contributions Black Americans have made to all aspects of our culture and society. As a health system, we recognize and extend our gratitude for the innovation and service of Black healthcare professionals and the courage and determination they’ve shown in the face of centuries of systemic obstacles. We encourage everyone to find meaningful ways throughout the year to learn about Black history and honor and appreciate Black achievements.
